The Wholls, blowing up live on stage.

Formidable force, The Wholls, continue to demonstrate just why anyone asking “is guitar music dead?” should perhaps crawl into whatever hole the NME disappeared into.

Like an Apollo space mission never to return, their seamlessly bold take on alt-rock knows no limits and as such, proceeds to propel these Bedford barons into dizzying new intergalactic heights.

Having barely drawn breath following their mighty sold out twenty one date JägerMusic tour of Germany with Austrian kindred spirits, Kaiser Franz Josef, the boys are back on the road; this time on their second UK headline tour across eleven dates to celebrate the worldwide release of their faultless debut album.

Not forgetting their Bedford roots they have enlisted the help of The Scruff to fill those all important support shoes for part of the tour. The Scruff themselves fast becoming underground megastars of their own, after making all the right noises across a string of UK gigs in 2017. The remainder of their sterling support line-up includes: Hello Operator, Mint, The Jade Assembly, Record Street, Carousel and more.

The Wholls’ self-titled debut album makes for essential listening and buries the age old question “is guitar music dead?”. Who knew bold could be so melodic? Boasting a plethora of premium anthems such as the heavyweight bruiser ‘Roll Out’, the melancholy dance floor jangle that is ‘Going Down’, the bouncy urban flavours of ‘I Beg You’ and the mysterious funk laden concoction that is ‘X21’ Eleven tracks later, this question championed by lazy music journalists becomes catastrophically irrelevant.

Though only released digitally in the UK, tracks such as ‘X21’ rocketing past a million streams online certainly suggests physical releases could be on the cards in the near future.

So what’s next for The Wholls?

2016 and 2017 saw the boys sign to Sony in Germany, drop a watertight LP and smash Reading and Leeds festivals (two years running) on This Feeling/BBC Introducing stages.

They certainly don’t look like slowing down in 2018. With lots in the pipeline following their March headline tour (including slots at various UK and European festivals to be announced), a brand spanking new video for ‘Going Down’, exciting new demos and talk of “some pretty special support slots and tours that we could have only dreamt of when we started out” (their words not mine), we look set to receive a Wholl lot of love in 2018.
