The Buns, live review from London Water Rats

It was by sheer accident that I stumbled up into The Water Rats in Kings Cross, on my way to a friend's

party. Words cannot express what a good stumbling it was! Thanks to the tip off from Erika Thornley and Richard

Searle. I love spontaneous nights and this one goes down in the hall of fame.

On first impression, these two mysterious ladies arrive on stage like a pair of elegant birds. Sophisticated and oozing charisma. You know instantly that you are going to be in for a treat and a big one at that. These lovely creatures roots stem from ‘Garage Secretarial Rock’ spreading their magic dust in their homeland basement clubs of Paris.

'Stockholm’ spoils us with sultry vocals and dirty beats. Julie Gomel is lead guitarist and echoes a slight Chrissie Hynde to her beautiful voice. Emilie Rambaud is the feisty and talented drummer whose vocals are par excellence. These two make a naughty pair!

‘Learn How To Lie’ is a powerful and upbeat song with the potential of being a hit. Both drums and guitar are fierce and catchy. Their harmonies are perfect together.

‘One More Shot’ opens with a slight Nirvana tinge but gracefully unfolds into The Buns own sound. In a complimentary way there is a slight sprinkling of B52’s. We are all taken on a roller coaster ride of rock and elegance and this track really stands out from their soon to be released album. (They are newly signed to Well Suspect Records).

The band have created their own unique style with retro Haute Couture spilling over a cocktail of tight intoxicating numbers. Both ladies compliment each other, along with a sound that sits perfectly on guitar and edgy drums. I want more of this cocktail please!

These ladies have worked hard from dive bars to guest appearances in French Stadiums. Featuring on the amazing rock compilation, 'Dirty Mod', (Well Suspect Records) produced by the talented and rather legendary, Richard Searle.

They have a natural capability to entice the audience and leave them mesmerised. This, added with the talent of cleverly mastering a 50’s–60’s vintage sound with a modern slant, makes both their music and song writing stand out.

The Buns have created their own originality and style that cleverly imbeds itself in your head, and leaves you walking away wanting more and more. "Please come back to London soon", I asked them after their set, and it was great to hear they will be back in October to launch their excellent new album ‘DANGEROUS’.

Happy days eh!
