Black Grape 'I Wanna Be Like You'

‘I Wanna Be Like You', is the new single from Black Grape's anticipated new album: ’Pop Voodoo'.

This song is cheeky, witty and definitely way overdue.

It’s a quick insight into a man who lives by the ethos “age is in the mind”, and perhaps struggling to accept the physical image does not match.

Now this is something many can or could relate to; don't like the idea of aging nor adapting lifestyle habits accordingly.

Shaun Ryder starts off the story with ‘he's a madman when he's drunk you know, everybody tells him so'.

This man still thinks he’s a lad, living the life of the youth: go out, have fun, maybe get a bit trashed unintentionally and living in the moment, while simultaneously struggling with accepting himself, and wishing he could transport his mind into someone else's body and be like them. Again, something so many can have a sense of humour about, because they can empathise.

As a woman born at the beginning of the 90s, I grew up in primary school listening to the bands from the ‘Britpop era'. Hearing this song, it's like Shaun and Kermit have simply picked up where they left off twenty years ago (with ‘Stupid Stupid Stupid') and maintained the key elements of that era, mixed in with today's sound, as heard in the catchy riffs harmonising very well with the vocals and lyrics.

Black Grape have certainly help set a solid foundation for the next generation of ‘Britpop', which is imminent given all the fantastic bands that are around right now – especially the unsigned ones!
