I cant help but share the sheer excitement and curiosity of being asked to review Lan Dyons and The Wet Nurse. A unique one off gig of stripped down new material.

Last time I saw Dan was in a sweaty Queens Head on Stockwell Road (South London), banging his war drums with The Fat White Family. As a performer he is one of those people you cannot take your eyes off. A fire ball of energy and talent. Well that's a far cry from his new work which was a privilege to experience and be blown away by at The Crowndale Club in Camden. His manager, Alice Harter, quite simply explained to me “he rocked up at my office with a guitar and I was sold”.

I love the transition of drum man to front man and you can be certain he will never look back. A peroxide Oscar Wilde oozing bohemian dandy. Opening with “Special People” you are instantly caught by his hypnotic bait/beat, and there ain't no escaping! This number has the undertones of 60’s psychedelia. Intelligent song writing with beautiful rhythmic crescendos taking you on a melodic and mysterious journey. I just wanted to lay back in the grass and look up at sunshine and blue skies!

“Biarritz” opens in a slouchy atmospheric delight with a slight hint of Serge Gainsbourg. It’s a foot stomper which made me feel I was part of an electric cowboy cabaret! The diversity of cello and guitar with butterfly harmonies really make this song stand out.

“Big Moon” allows us to hear the diversity of Dan’s vocals. A husky velvet scarf vaporising from his mouth! There is something both haunting and beautiful within the lyrics and the music that take you on a dreamy absinthe trip.

The current climate in music is exciting. More and more bands are popping up with an original sound – Thank god! This is one of them! Lan Dyons and The Wet Nurse are a big sparkling gem in the music treasure trove. Keep an eye on em, they’re gonna be big!!!!
