There's something about listening to The Toilers, that's akin to reading a pornographic magazine. It's glorious yet makes you feel pleasantly ashamed all at once. Listening to The Toilers EP, you are engulfed by an anachronism of late 60's dirty blues that wouldn't be out of place in a smokey bar programmed by Jean-Luc Picard on the Holodeck. (Balls, my geek is showing.) Basically, this band aren't dirty blues, they're down right filthy. Opening track "Sail On" begins with the sound of the sea (which is always welcome by the Love Pirates at the Zine) before the crashing guitars and Brian Downey-esque drum beats summon up visions of rock 'n' Roll pirates with guitars that get your feet a-tapping. "Seven Year Bitch" is by far the the sultriest track on the EP. Summoning demons from the US Blues of last century with a twist of Led Zep for good measure before the guitar leads into a song sure to get any crowded venue dancing. "Banshee Betty" is by far my stand-out track, blending influences effortlessly, we are left with a track that's as haunting as it is enchanting. Described as the tale of "a man seduced by a beautiful Irish witch gets more than he bargained for." It speaks for itself. Final track "Outlawed" invokes a Celtic ghost as it launches into a story of it's hero, we are taken through his journey as the song sweeps through... There's a suggestion of witchcraft in the very chords of the track.
