'You Are, You Are' - magnificent new single from October Drift
OK, I've only known about October Drift for a few months, after being gob smacked by them at the Hoxton show (report here) on their February tour.
And now, brand new this week, they've uploaded this one-take, short film delight of a promo for the new single, 'You Are, You Are' which is available from May 18th.
Like a stadium band (that is one big sound they've got) having fun playing in your local bar, October Drift sold out their debut headline tour earlier this year, based on a growing word of mouth reputation after wowing audiences at low-key gigs at the end of 2014.
"We don't need the world anymore..." - Really, word of mouth, I mean, and not just viralling the latest Vine or whatever. A mailing list is the band communication with their growing league of admirers, right now. The October Drift social network of choice is obviously a gig. It does the trick. That is a fact. As a live promoter, long before they were due on stage, my keen eye noticed they were mobilised with a DIY swag store, and their logo imprinting itself on your retinas. The show sealed the deal. Their fuzzy reverb and frantic dynamic energy pulse a manic energy from the stage. I couldn't help but follow. Just like you would a twitter account, except this is (my) real life.
'You Are, You Are' builds on this early promise - saws and soars at the same time. Immediate from the first listen. The band describe it as “an optimistic ode to companionship, reflecting how one can become so obsessive and caught up in something that you totally lose yourself in it.”
We need all the optimism we can get right now. This is already a historic year, the sound track to match it is in the small to medium venues we're losing. Get involved; The three track single - ‘You Are, You Are’, ‘Whoever’, ‘Lost’ is available on limited edition, handmade CD packs and the band are in the flesh on their May headline tour ; 22nd - Dot 2 Dot Festival, Manchester, 23rd - Dot 2 Dot Festival, Bristol and 27th - The Old Blue Last (free entry, early arrival advised) London.
