23 March:, spring has sprung. Live on stage: Suspects, then SONS, then heady headliners Asylums. All on one Friday night of quality, self propelled punky noisy rocking joy. A BE THERE show and a bonafide Gig Of The Week. Here's the ticket link in case you need it urgently (you do!) https://livenation.co.uk/asylums - read on, for more;
Living the dream in austerity, the underground guitar bands scenes are not only having an unbelievably good time, but underpinning it with good hearts, collaboration and poetic daydreams. The dreams are coming true. All three bands playing tonight are no strangers to the kind of radio play (BBC and Radio X included) and getting to appear at festivals that you would wish for as musicians.
Another Cool Thing? Opening the show, Suspects (one of the Cool Thing ideas factory collective of musical activism helping to shape the emerging music industry now running parallel to the mainstream with all the extra creativity required to survive dystopia). With quality as the label's bottom line, it's no surprise that Suspects are a BBC Introducing Sound Of 2018. Lucky Sebright Arms audience get their first live show of the year.
The 74 seconds of latest single 'Anaphylactic Shock' are exactly that, with a video by Cool Thing visualiser, Kana Waiwaiku (who took the above image) and cameos from more of the family. Proof that you can bring the decibels and energy without losing a SONG since they debuted with the Download worthy 'Innocence' last summer. Tonight will kick off with Southenders larging it like no episode of Eastenders could ever imagine.
Essex bands with a Brighton Rock sandwich. Next up on stage, another hard rocking tip of the year, SONS. The south coast brothers duo are one of This Feeling's Big In 2018 tips and living up to it with every show. It's a perfect line up for them as this entire bill could grace any of the major rock music festivals in fine style. In 2016 and 2017 you could have caught Asylums and SONS doing just this (Reading Festival included). 2018 look out. Nothing beats close range like being at this show, though. In a twist of fate my first SONS gig was actually in Essex. They were worth the adventure from London (so good that even though we missed the last train and had to ride around in shopping trolleys to keep warm, I keep going back for more).
Left to right, Lee and Nick Meldrum have just exploded ever since. Reactions from fans and media alike, for every release and show are quite rightly thrilled.
Another Cool Thing! The Coolest. Asylums. In a parallel dimension where Simon Cowell is running an open mic karaoke night in a village pub, this band are headlining massive festivals and we're all jumping about like maniacs and singing along. Their forthcoming second album might just do that, you never know. The excitement from those that have heard is frantic. In my head the bands in TheZineUK story can achieve everything, so stay with this tale as it grows (because these talents write timeless songs and play memorable shows). The first Asylums album actually emitted Killer Brain Waves!
If I was a journalist I would have recorded a conversation I had recently to do a proper preview, but the universes of our minds colliding in conversation were so cosmic that we went off on tangents, I just know we chatted magic and when I came out of the spell I couldn't do it justice. So I'll just say For Fuck Sake Do Not Miss Asylums - one of my alternative occupations - if you get the chance. TheZineUK will have to do a real interview another time. Properly though.
So there you have it, three hot fan based bands with six degrees of separation; It true. When we were out rocking at The Great Escape Festival in 2016 (by we I mean SONS and TheZineUK) we witnessed Asylums bring an outbreak of electricity and grins in a small bar which no doubt helped win the many cool festival appearances they've made since. One of them, Leeds Festival, inspired a cover shot (by Tarquin Clark) of our picture book story. Asylums are a front page news worthy movement. Anyway, now the tapestry is weaving again and you have to be there on Friday because something amazing is going to happen on stage. Three times. The magic number. Don't take my word for it, see (taster, below) for yourselves;
